Responsible for providing tutorial instruction for students, enhancing the understanding and quality level of departmental assignments, and assisting with general writing skills and strategies. Writing Tutors also need to greet students as they enter the lab and make sure they sign-in properly in the absence of a host, as well as making sure the student gets connected to the right Writing Tutor. Additionally, Writing Tutors are expected to closely monitor all activity within the center to ensure that all students are being properly attended to, and that the atmosphere within the center is professional and orderly at all times. Finally, Tutors will be responsible for the general upkeep and maintenance of the lab, and complete various projects as needed according to guidance provided by the Tutoring Supervisors and Assistant Director.
• Provide educational assistance to students for writing, which includes improving understanding and comprehension of subject matter, genre conventions, and revision strategies.• Assist in preparation of workshops and materials to enhance course assignments.• Assist in tracking student’s performance.• Participation in scheduled training sessions.• Willingness to perform other writing/tutoring duties as assigned.• Comfortable working with student in-person and via e-mail/other electronic platform.
• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent.• Must have completed at least English 101 and 102 with a “B” or better.• Proficient in computer usage and ability to use word processing.• Good organizational and communication skills.• Team player within the department as well as with other departments.• Communicate effectively in a diverse, multi-cultural community environment.• Understand the community college philosophy of education.• Certificate of completion or 30 college hours preferred.• Recent tutoring experience preferred.• Prior work experience in a community college environment preferred.
