Position Summary:
The Agricultural Sciences Complex (ASC) Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the college's farm, ensuring it operates as an educational resource for students and a sustainable agricultural enterprise. The position requires managing field operations, livestock, greenhouse activities, and supervising staff, as well as maintaining compliance with safety standards and agricultural best practices. The ASC Manager plays a key role in supporting the Agricultural Sciences department’s mission by supporting learning opportunities, managing purchasing, and promoting the farm’s contributions to the community.
Essential Functions:
Farm Operations
Direct field activities, including tillage, planting, cultivation, harvesting, and establishing cover crops.
Manage irrigation, fertilizer, and chemical applications.
Oversee greenhouse management, including watering, seeding, propagation, soil mixing, and task delegation.
Ensure compliance with safety standards and agricultural regulations.
Livestock Management
Lead livestock operations, including nutrition, waste management, pregnancy and parturition, and overall care and welfare.
Maintain daily cleanliness and presentation of facilities and pens.
Personnel Management
Manage lab personnel, including hiring, training, and overseeing work performance.
Support department events and hands-on student learning activities.
Facilities and Budget Management
Coordinate with the facilities team on grounds management and maintenance of farm infrastructure.
Oversee the agricultural sciences purchasing, including managing special course fees.
Public Relations and Community Engagement
Assist with events, workshops, and promotions for the ASC activities.
Track and report data on farm production, growth, and community impact.
Innovation and Communication
Report regularly on-farm activities and propose solutions for improvements.
Minimum Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, or related Field
• 3 years of experience in farm management
• Valid Idaho driver’s license or ability to get one within 30 days of employment
• Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
• Knowledge of sustainable and organic farming practices
• Proficiency in advanced animal husbandry, including experience with breeding, pregnancy management, and parturition for small and large livestock.
• Familiarity with veterinary care protocols, including recognizing signs of illness, managing injuries, and administering medications.
• Experience in nutrition planning, waste management, and maintaining welfare standards for diverse livestock species.
• Excellent problem solving and decision-making skills
• Flexibility to work extended hours, weekends, and holidays during peak seasons or emergent situations
• Ability to develop and implement growth and production strategies
• Understanding of safety standards and regulations in agricultural operations
• Ability to work in various weather conditions and lift 50 pounds repeatedly.
